The Long Island Association has been active for nearly a century – we were founded in 1926 and our work has resulted in positive change.
What we have done:
Over the past ten years alone, the LIA has secured more than $7.5 billion in economic development investments for our region. We have been a leader in securing relief for Long Island’s resilient businesses devastated by the impacts from the Covid-19 pandemic.
Highlights of the LIA’s accomplishments include:
Successfully led efforts to make the New York State property tax cap permanent, supported a state tax cut that was enacted for manufacturers, and advocated for mixed-use projects to provide more housing opportunities.
Led regional efforts to make Long Island the offshore wind capital of the country with partners including international companies and government agencies.
Advocated for funding and approval of the LIRR Third Track project; led efforts to secure an investment of $2.6 billion from the U.S. Department of Energy for an electron ion collider (eRHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory, and led efforts for funding for Long Island MacArthur Airport, the Ronkonkoma Hub, and Nassau Hub.
Secured millions of dollars for innovative infrastructure at research and academic institutions and successfully advocated for funding for a life sciences industry cluster in New York. Incubated Accelerate Long Island, a regional collaboration of research and academic institutions to commercialize technology and fund startup companies.
Launched new non-profits focusing on specific sectors, including the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is now Discover Long Island, and created partnerships with other non-profits.
Our future:
To guarantee a vibrant Long Island for future generations, the LIA will continue its advocacy to make our region more affordable for all residents and young families by creating good-paying jobs and viable child care options, encouraging clean energy development, advocating for small businesses, turbo-charging our economy through innovation, and communicating the importance of diversity for business success.
