Governor David A. Paterson announced that he is calling an extraordinary session of the New York State Legislature starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 28. On the agenda are a number of bills that the LIA has been supporting. The LIA encourages you to call your representatives in Albany to lend your voice in support. The bills are:

1.      The Power of SUNY

This bill would grant greater autonomy to individual colleges and universities in the SUNY system.   This would include setting their own tuition rates (with caps) and using the individual campuses as economic development engines in their own communities, including technology transfer to commercial markets as an outgrowth of research and development efforts.

2.      The Energize New York Power Program

This program would replace the Power for Jobs Program, which the legislature would have to renew on an annual basis. The new proposed Energize New York Power Program would allow for power contracts for terms of up to seven years and would redeploy inexpensive hydropower to downstate markets as an economic development tool. There are currently two versions of the bill, one supported by the Assembly and one supported by the Governor and the State Senate. The LIA is supporting the Governor and Senate’s version of the bill and urges you to call your Assembly member and tell them to do the same.

3.      Wine in Grocery Stores

As the name implies, this bill would support wine being sold in grocery stores which the LIA has been supportive of.

The LIA urges you to call your Senators and Assemblymembers to voice your support for the above mentioned bills. If you don’t know who your Senator or Assemblymember is, call the Suffolk County Board of Elections at (631) 852-4590 or the Nassau County Board of Elections at (516) 571-2411.
