More than 800 Long Island Association members and guests celebrated the “Best of Long Island” at the 2010 LIA Annual Awards Gala held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.

They gathered to honor four esteemed leaders for their dedication and support of the greater Long Island community at the Association’s 27th annual premiere black tie event.

“It is the LIA’s privilege to salute the accomplishments of leaders who understand the relationship between working in a community and giving something back. This year’s honorees are a shining example of all that is good about Long Island,” said Brian C. Cullen, chairman of the LIA board of directors and co-president and co-chief operating officer, King Kullen Grocery Company, Inc.

This year’s Long Island Association Medal of Honor recipient Joseph R. Ficalora, chairman, president and CEO, New York Community Bancorp, Inc., was honored for his leadership of NYCB from a mutual savings bank with seven branches in Queens and Nassau to a publicly traded multi-bank holding company that has more than $42 billion is assets and operates two bank subsidiaries with a total of over 280 branches.

In addition to overseeing 3,500+ employees nationwide, Ficalora provides leadership to numerous non-profit organizations and established the Ficalora Family Foundation to better support many local charities.

The LIA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Dr. Sean Fanelli, president emeritus Nassau Community College, was recognized for his lifetime of service and dedication to both the educational and small business communities as a highly respected educator and administrator.

Two of Long Island’s best-known and most successful businesspeople, brothers Jay Bernstein and Gene Bernstein, received The Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award in recognition of their support of numerous charitable and cultural organizations. Named in honor of the late singer/songwriter/philanthropist, the awards were presented by Sandy Chapin.

For their selflessness and generosity, both together and individually, Jay and Gene understand the importance of giving back. In 1987 the brothers established the Northville Long Island Classic Champions Tour golf event which has helped raise millions of dollars for Schneider’s Children’s Hospital and generated millions more for the local economy.

“It was a great honor to receive an award named for Harry Chapin, one that has been given over the past years to so many good friends and colleagues who have likewise offered their time and resources to help those among us on LI who are in need of assistance,” said Gene Bernstein, chairman, Northville Industries.

Incoming LIA President Kevin Law was in attendance and made a brief statement to the gala attendees about the importance of the LIA and its place in helping to solve regional issues.
