Former New York City Mayor Edward Koch will be the featured guest at a special LIA Executive Breakfast: “The Future of New York: A Unique and Timely Conversation,” on April 15 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.  The conversation-style event will be moderated by LIA President Matthew T. Crosson.

Born in the Bronx, Koch’s family moved to Newark, New Jersey during the Depression and later to Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn when he was a teenager. A decorated combat infantryman achieving the rank of sergeant during World War II, he graduated from New York University Law School in 1948 and opened a small law practice.

As an active member of the Greenwich Village Independent Democrats, Koch ran successfully for district leader in 1963 against Carmine DeSapio. Koch was reelected in 1965 and elected to the City Council the following year.

Koch was elected the first Democrat since the Depression era to represent Manhattans "silk stocking" 17th district in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1968, where he earned a reputation as a competent legislator and champion of social causes. Reelected four times, Koch served on the House Committee on Banking, the Appropriations Committee, and was one of four congressional observers on the Emergency Financial Control Board established to deal with New York Citys fiscal crisis of 1975. During his tenure in Congress Koch spoke out against the war in Vietnam and worked for federal aid to mass transit, health care for the aged, and a family assistance program.

In 1978 he was elected to the first of three terms as the 105th mayor of New York City. With his dynamic personality and trademark greeting, “How’m I Doin’,” Koch is credited with bringing fiscal stability to the insolvent city and with instituting merit selection of city judges.

Taking over the mayoralty, Koch was faced with a city nearing bankruptcy and a $1 billion deficit. He restored the citys credit in his first term through a series of budget cutting measures, enabling the city to enter the bond market within a few years and raise capital funds. Koch brought the city back to fiscal solvency, boasting a $500 million surplus by 1983.

Koch, who vowed to be the first four term mayor, sought another reelection in 1989 but was defeated in the Democratic primary by then Manhattan Borough President David Dinkins.

Currently an author, lecturer, columnist, radio show host, and credited with the television revival of “The People’s Court,” Koch has remained popular since leaving office. He is also a commentator on Bloomberg AM, a weekly guest on NY1 television, and each week writes a political column.
