A who’s who of business and community leaders will gather to celebrate and honor the 2010 Long Island Association (LIA) award recipients including the LIA Lifetime Achievement honoree Dr. Sean A. Fanelli, president emeritus, Nassau Community College. Long Island’s premiere social evening each year, the LIA Annual Gala will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Recognized for his lifetime of service and dedication to both the educational and small business communities, Dr. Fanelli is a highly respected educator and administrator, and was president of New York State’s largest undergraduate educational institution. Nassau Community College (NCC) has a diversified student population of more than 22,000 credit students and over 15,000 non-credit students per year. During Dr. Fanelli’s 27 years as President, he made service to Long Island’s small business community a primary focus. Under his leadership, Nassau has earned a “rock solid” reputation as a leading education resource for Long Island. NCC educates thousands of incumbent and entry-level workers annually providing low cost, high quality programs ranging from high-end computer skills, and the latest in office technology, to training “under-prepared” workers to earn a GED diploma. With a total of 49 years in education, his expertise in the field of Higher Education was recognized via his selection as a member and/or Chair of evaluation teams for the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges and the American Council on Education, and as a consultant and Chair of evaluation teams for the New Jersey Department of Higher Education. Dr. Fanelli has served as the Chair of the Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE); Co-Chair of New York Campus Compact (NYCC); on the Board of Directors for the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the American Council on Education (ACE) Commission on Life Long Learning; and many other Long Island based associations and organizations. Dr. Fanelli has received numerous prestigious awards including the Jewish Chautauqua Society “Bridge to Humanity Award” from the Suburban Temple Brotherhood; the Thomas Jefferson Center’s William J. Brennan, Jr. Award; and the Alexander Meiklejohn Award for Academic Freedom by the American Association of University Professors for his efforts in protecting free speech on the college campus. Despite a demanding schedule as President, Dr. Fanelli’s heart remains that of a teacher and educator. Each semester, he continues to teach a course. Dr. Fanelli holds a Ph.D. from Fordham University in Aquatic Ecology, with a specialization in Physical and Chemical Limnology. Before becoming the fourth President of NCC, Fanelli served in many academic posts beginning with professor of biology, associate dean, and dean of academic affairs/deputy to the president of Westchester Community College. The Long Island Association (LIA) is the region’s largest and most influential business and civic organization. With more than 5,000 members and a 57-member board of directors, the LIA is the voice of Long Island. Created over 80 years ago, the LIA brings together business, labor, education, government, not-for-profits, chambers of commerce and civic organizations working to make Long Island an even better place to live, work, raise a family, and do business.
